Bovatec or Rumensin?

Beefbiz - 12/15/2016 14:04
Both are ionophores and both work the same way in the rumen. They both change the bug population to make the rumen more efficient, so cattle gain better and use less feed per pound of gain.
Rumensin is more effective on either grain or forage rations, at lower levels and costs less. Rumensin is also the better cocci control.
Bovatec doesn't have the off flavor, so it's often used in starter rations and creep feeds.
They do have some different clearances from the FDA. Both are approved for all growing and fed cattle and replacement heifers. Bovatec has a sheep clearance that Rumensin does not. Rumensin is cleared for mature beef cows and milking dairy cows and Bovatec is not.
